What Data Analysis Skills Does Claude Offer, and How Well Do They Suit SMEs?

Claude's Data Skills are 10 ready-made capabilities that cover everything from exploring raw data and writing SQL to statistical analysis and building ready-to-use dashboards. SME owners can start using them right away without a data analyst team of their own.

According to the McKinsey Global Institute, organizations that use data seriously in their decision-making are 23 times more likely to acquire customers than their competitors and 19 times more likely to be profitable. This shows that access to data is not only for large companies. It is an advantage SMEs can reach too, given the right tools. McKinsey

How do Data Skills in Claude differ from asking an ordinary question?

Data Skills are specialized "working guides" built into Claude. When a task involves data, Claude switches to the way a real data analyst thinks, instead of giving a general answer from broad knowledge.

Unlike typing a loose question, each skill has clear steps and standards. For example, the data exploration skill always checks for empty values and duplicates first, and the SQL skill adjusts its syntax to the database you actually use, such as Snowflake or BigQuery. The results are accurate and can be used straight away without rework.

Can an SME without a data team really use these Data Skills?

Yes, because the Skills are designed to start from an ordinary business question. You do not need any prior knowledge of SQL or statistics. The business owner just says what they want to know, and the system turns it into analysis steps.

For example, the explore-data skill checks what problems may be hiding in an existing sales file, such as duplicate rows or abnormal values, before the real analysis. The analyze skill answers questions from simple ones like "which month sold the most?" to complex ones like "what caused Branch A's sales to drop this quarter?" For an SME that already has customer and sales data, even in a plain Excel file, that is enough to start using these skills immediately.

Do I need to connect a database like Snowflake or BigQuery before I can use them?

No. Connecting a database (called a Connector) is an optional extra for businesses that already have a data system. A typical SME can start by uploading an Excel or CSV file with no further setup.

Connectors such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Hex, Amplitude and Atlassian suit businesses whose data is spread across several systems and who want Claude to pull live data for analysis directly, without downloading files themselves. This is usually the next step once a business grows and has more data. It is consistent with ETDA's 2025 Digital Maturity Index survey, which found that most Thai SMEs are still at the "Digital Follower" level, meaning they use some technology but not yet fully. Starting with basic files is therefore a better starting point than rushing to connect complex systems. ETDA

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Data Skills differ from the Data Plugin? A Plugin is a larger bundle that combines several Skills with Connectors for linking external databases. A Skill is an individual capability inside a Plugin, such as explore-data or analyze.

Do I have to install Data Skills myself? You do not install them one by one. Normally Claude selects the skill that fits the task automatically, or you can add the whole Data Plugin by clicking the suggestion card in the chat.

Can I use Data Skills with Excel files I already have? Yes. These Skills read .xlsx and .csv files directly, with no need to convert them to a database first. This suits SMEs that still keep their data mainly in Excel.

Can Data Skills help make a good-looking dashboard? Yes. The build-dashboard skill creates an HTML dashboard with KPI cards, charts and data filters in a single file. You can open it in a browser right away without installing additional software.

How can I tell if the AI has analyzed the data wrongly? The validate-data skill is designed to review analysis results before they are used, for example by checking whether the numbers were calculated the right way and whether the conclusions match the actual data. Use it every time before making an important decision based on the results.

Is it still worthwhile for a very small SME with little data? Yes, because skills such as analyze and statistical-analysis work with small data files, for example monthly sales of just a few dozen rows. You do not need a large volume of data to start benefiting.
